The
Children’s Habitat Garden Keeps Growing
In
2005, Genesee Land Trust volunteer, Chris Young, along with help
from Broccolo Tree and Lawn Care and grant funding from The Captain
Planet Foundation, created a Children’s Habitat Garden at the Durand
Eastman School in East Irondequoit . As a result, the science curriculum
underwent a change that stressed wildlife awareness as the garden
was used a laboratory in a hands-on program designed by the district’s
Science chair and vice principal, Bill Ottman. The photo, taken
by Ms. Young, shows the garden’s growth in one year.
Genesee
Land Trust is a local land conservation organization that protects
over 2500 acres in Greater Rochester. The Children’s Garden was
a part of the 2005 Backyard Habitat Garden Tour. This year’s tour
takes place on June 23 rd . Visit www.geneseelandtrust.org
. for more information. The Captain Planet Foundation, located
in Atlanta , Georgia , encourages environmental awareness for school
children and funds children’s gardens across the country.
