Farm Newsletter (MS-Word): December 2006 Farmers and Consumers Working Cooperatively The primary purpose of Genesee Valley Organic CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is to produce and distribute high quality, certified organically grown vegetables, fruit, and other local farm products to participating members. The CSA is a farmer-shareholder co-op open to anyone in the greater Rochester, NY area. A weekly food share includes 7 to 11 selections of organically grown vegetables and small fruit—enough for several good vegetable eaters. Bulk quantities of whatever is plentiful at the farm are also available for canning, freezing, and storage. Every member makes a commitment for the entire season and families with children are especially welcome. The CSA supports local organic growers, and, by extension, the local economy. For more information about organic farming and how to be a part of our organization, see the FAQ page. The Status QuoAn impenetrable wall of plastic and petroleum separates people in modern urban society from the source of their food. In the United States, people eat food that has been highly processed, packaged, and transported to be sold to them from supermarkets, vending machines or fast food restaurants. Few stores bother to label food with its point of origin. The 7 to 10 percent of the farm value of the raw food in processed products is buried by the 90 percent - the chopping, blending, cooking, extruding, packaging, distributing and advertising. "Fresh" and "local" in the language of supermarket produce buyers means accessible within 24 hours by air freight. The alternative to this state of affairs is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). GVOCSA Vision Statement:We envision the creation of a land-based community of people of diverse ages, backgrounds and incomes, farmers and non-farmers, who are committed to love, justice, equality, democracy and cooperation, and honor the intrinsic value of nature and food, and the dignity of labor. The members of this community will work gently together to learn and teach others to live sustainably, in the broadest sense, for the health of all living creatures and the planet. We will practice an agriculture that supports a whole, healthy, sustainable and loving community. Find answers to frequently asked questions in the GVOCSA FAQ page.
