Genesee Land Trust Wins John F. Wegman Fund Grant

Conkey Corner Park Playground

The Genesee Land Trust has received a $7,500 grant from the John F. Wegman Fund of the Rochester Area Community Foundation to help build a playground at the Conkey Corner Park this fall.

The park, located in the city at the corner of Conkey and Clifford avenues in a formerly vacant lot, was created in partnership with the city of Rochester. It is the gateway to the El Camino Trail, a priority urban initiative of the local land trust. In an area of the city with the least amount of green space, grass was planted and game tables and stone benches were installed. In the fall of 2008, gardens were planted and additional plantings were done in the spring by Broccolo Tree & Lawn, Genesee Land Trust volunteers and teachers, parents and school children from Schools #50, #22 and #8.  The installation of a safe and sturdy playground is a much-anticipated finishing touch to this corner of green — one that the children are eagerly awaiting.

The John F. Wegman Fund grant, combined with a previous grant from the Greater Rochester Health Foundation, ensures that the playground will be built in fall of 2009.  Genesee Land Trust is most appreciative of this great gift and also for the support it has received over the years from the Community Foundation.
