WORK PARTIES

Spring
work parties are planned for March, April, May and June
at various preserves. Work generally includes trail repair
and building, general clean-up and invasive species mitigation.
Please keep checking this page for exact date, times and locales
as spring and summer work parties are scheduled after the first
of the year. If
you would like to learn more about volunteer preserve work or have
an interest in being on the Land Management Committee, please contact
Kathy Blachowski at steward@geneseelandtrust.org.

Brookdale Preserve Bird Hike: Wednesday, May 13, 7:30 a.m. David Strong will explore the Preserve looking for migrating and resident birds. Interested participants may visit the Reed Road Bird Sanctuary afterwards if time allows. Directions: From the intersection of Jefferson (Rte 252) and Scottsville (Rte 383) Roads, just west of the Genesee River, go south on Scottsville Road two miles. Turn right onto Brook Road and then right into the parking lot.

Native Plant Sale, Saturday, May 16 from 8:30 to 2pm at
the Brighton Town Hall located at 2300 Elmwood Ave., Rochester 14618:
Start your garden by giving to a great cause! Native plants, shrubs
and trees so sale with all proceeds used toward our conservation
efforts. If you would like to donate plants and/or would like

Braddock
Bay Bird Observatory (BBBO) Open House: Sunday, May 17, 8 a.m. to
11 a.m. See migratory birds up close with the experts at
the Kaiser-Manitou Beach Bird Banding Station, land protected in
partnership with Genesee Land Trust and BBBO. Learn about the ongoing
research projects and explore critical migratory bird habitat. Children
are especially welcome! Directions: Take the Lake Ontario State
Parkway west. Exit at Manitou Beach Road and go right. Follow Manitou
Beach Road to where it bears left and becomes Braddocks Avenue. Follow this link to the BBBO Web site!
National Trails Day Celebration Hike: Saturday, June 6, 10 a.m. to Noon Join Tom Frey to hike the abandoned railway bed before its transformation into the new “El Camino” trail. The two mile walk stretches through city neighborhoods from Conkey Corner Park to Seneca Park. (A return ride will be available if desired.) Directions: Take Clinton Ave north. At St. Michael’s Church turn left onto Clifford Ave. Park in the parking lot on the right at 214 Clifford Ave.
Weed Walk at Horizon Hill Conservation Area: Saturday, June 6 beginning at 9:30 a.m. Learn to recognize several invasive plant species affecting Monroe County, and visit the scenic Horizon Hill section of Perinton's Crescent Trail. Experts will answer your questions. Will meet in the Horizon Hill parking area, located "next door" to the law offices of Harris Beach at 99 Garnsey Road, near Rt. 96. Children’s Walk at the Big Woods, Saturday, June 13, 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Don and Donna Traver will lead a walk for children (ages 8 – 12) and their parents at the Gosnell Big Woods Preserve in the Town of Webster. First explore the Big Field and then follow the trail into the old growth woods. Directions: Meet at the Preserve parking lot at the corner of Vosburg
and Drumm Roads. Take Bay Road north off of Rte 104, turn right
at end onto Lake Road, bear right onto Vosburg. Please call 256-2130 for reservations

Backyard Habitat Garden Tour, Saturday, June 20, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This perennial favorite fundraiser will feature properties in Fairport,
Pittsford, Henrietta, and Brighton. See everything from grassless
grandeur to totally organic, to a property at the entrance to Corbett’s
Glen, offering a great detour visit. Sara Rubin's garden is back
by popular demand! Tickets go on sale in May with member discounts
sold at the Land Trust office. Tickets also available at all Wegmans

Butterfly Walk at Ganargua Creek Meadow Preserve, Saturday July 11 10:00 am – Noon Enjoy this hotspot for butterflies with the Rochester Butterfly Club and experts Carol and David Southby. Bring binoculars, water and a snack. Wear long pants and appropriate footgear as there is poison ivy. Directions: From Rte 31 in Macedon, turn south onto Rte 306 (Wayneport Rd). Turn east onto Wilkinson Rd. At crest of hill turn south onto Bunker Hill Dr; park at end.
Bats and Bugs Friday, August 7, 8:00 – 9:30 p.m. Join Martha Zettel and Bill O’Neill at dusk to scan for our native bats and their prey – night-flying insects. Bring a flashlight, wear long sleeves and/or wear insect repellant. Meet at 677 Five Points Road in the Town of Rush. . Directions: (same as Frog Walk) South on 390 to Exit 11.
