Island Cottage Woods Preserve

Description:

Part of a wooded area bordering the western edge of Round Pond, this preserve is a favorite birding site. It is tops among local, critical migratory bird stopover habitats.

History:

Originally acquired by Bird Refuges Inc., this property was transferred to GLT for permanent protection in 1999.

Public Access: On Island Cottage Rd. Exit off of Rte 390 onto Latta Road. Go east to the first intersection -- Island Cottage Road. Go north on Island Cottage Road. The entrance to the Preserve is off of a small portion of Old Island Cottage Road on the east side immediately adjacent to the "Lake Plains Waterfowl" club house. There is a short trail just over the guardrail to your right that loops around and comes back to the abandoned road or cuts over to Schaller's woods.
Rules:

All properties are managed strictly for nature preservation. Welcome uses include nature study, photography, and walking. To avoid damaging wildflowers, please stay on trail in this preserve.

  • No hunting or trapping
  • No horses, motorized vehicles, or bicycles permitted
  • All dogs must be leashed and cleaned up after
  • No removal of any vegetation or dead wood
  • No camping or fires
  • No trail cutting or marking of trees
  • Please respect neighboring properties
