Captain Planet Foundation

The Genesee Land Trust is proud to announce that it is the recipient of a Captain Planet Foundation grant in the amount of $500 dollars which will help fund The Children’s Habitat Garden at Durand Eastman School in East Irondequoit. The other NY State recipients were The Children’s Aid Society, in the Bronx, and James Mc Cure Smith Community School in Harlem.

The Captain Planet Foundation, founded in 1991, is an initiative of the Turner Foundation, Ted Turner, chairman, located in Atlanta Georgia. Its mission is to “fund and support hands-on environmental projects for children and youth” with an objective to “empower children and youth around the world to work individually and collectively to solve environmental problems in their own neighborhoods and communities.” It believes that through environmental education children can achieve a better understanding and appreciation of the world in which they live. Captain Planet Foundation funds small environmental projects throughout the United States and internationally.

Genesee Land Trust’s Children’s Habitat Garden project also received support from Broccolo Tree and Lawn Care in Rochester and facilitated changes to the East Irondequoit Science Department, under the direction of Mr. Bill Ottman, where curriculum will now include hands-on environmental studies. The Children’s Habitat Garden at the Durand Eastman School was planted on May 23, by Chris Young, land trust member and volunteer and 28 third grade students, working in shifts throughout the day.

This “garden in progress” will be featured on this year’s Backyard Habitat Tour, an annual Genesee Land Trust event, held this year on June 18th, one that promotes planting to attract and protect wildlife. Proceeds from the tour are used to support the conservation efforts of Genesee Land Trust, which now protects over 1600 acres in greater Rochester.
