History Walks at Lower Falls

  • Maplewood Park 250 Maplewood Avenue Rochester, NY, 14613 United States (map)

Join Genesee River Alliance and local heritage educator Tyler Lucero for a guided walk through the historic landscape of Rochester’s Lower Falls. The walk will start at Maplewood Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and home to a nationally accredited rose garden. We’ll explore stories of the Haudenosaunee, freedom seekers making their way to Canada, early industrialists, landscape architects, and more. We'll also see Kelsey’s Landing, a recognized National Underground Railroad Network site.

Along the way be sure to enjoy the views of the stunning 110-foot waterfall!

We will meet in Maplewood Park at the Kelsey’s Landing sign between the two Genesee Riverway Trail signs. All 3 signs are located near the office building in the park on the opposite side to the Rose garden (scroll to bottom of the screen to see an image with the location highlighted).

Accessibility: This guided, family-friendly and stroller accessible walk is open to all ages and abilities. Please keep in mind the walk includes a steep slope down towards Lower Falls and the same slope back up to the starting point. If you would like to use an accessible parking spot, please reach out to let us know.

ASL interpreters are available for the walk upon request. Please let us know if you would like an interpreter.

For more information, please email our Inclusion Point of Contact, Elliotte Bowerman, at ebowerman@geneseelandtrust.org.

Parking: Parking will be reliant on available street parking. There will be a large community celebration at the same location, so please plan accordingly. You will not be able to park in the lot at Maplewood Park. If you are in need of an accessible parking space, please let us know and we will arrange a spot for you.

IMPORTANT: Driving Park Avenue Bridge will be closed to vehicles at the time of the walks due to a community celebration taking place on the bridge and at Maplewood Park. This will also effect the availability of street parking.

Please dress for the weather, bring a water bottle, and wear sturdy footwear. Each walk will last around 45 minutes.

Space is limited to 15 participants per time slot: 12:30 pm, 1:45 pm, and 3:00 pm, so please be sure to RSVP in advance using the buttons below.
