Trail Keepers: Invasive Species Control at Macyville Woods

  • Macyville Woods Nature Preserve 7474 Seaman Street Sodus Point, NY, 14555 United States (map)

Join Genesee Land Trust for a volunteer event at Macyville Woods Nature Preserve in the Village of Sodus Point. Macyville Woods, offers 34 acres of woodlands and wetlands nearby Lake Ontario and Sodus Bay. We’ll start the afternoon with some berry picking. Wineberries are a non-native raspberry relative, originally imported to cross with our native raspberries to improve their flavor. Wineberries are very sweet and soft; excellent for snacking, pies, or jams. After picking our fill we will work to remove as many plants as we can from the preserve to stop the spread of this non-native species.

All ages and ability levels are encouraged to sign-up; there will be a job for everyone. Please dress appropriately for working outdoors (sturdy footwear, long pants, sun protection). We suggest you bring a water bottle and work gloves. Tools and instruction will be provided.

To attend you must sign-up below. Please do not attend if you are not feeling well. An email reminder will be sent the week of the event with directions and parking details. With event or accessibility questions contact Will Macaluso at wmacaluso@geneseelandtrust.org.

 About Trail Keepers
Trail Keepers is a volunteer group that gets together each month to work on trail and habitat improvement projects on Genesee Land Trust nature preserves and other conservation lands throughout the region. If you’re interested in volunteering outside, picking up some outdoor skills, and meeting others who care about the environment – Trail Keepers is the opportunity for you.

Parking: Parking for the Preserve is located off Seaman Street, perpendicular to the red barn and fence. The trail entrance is located directly south of the parking area. Please do not block the entrance to the Highway Department facility. There are no designated accessible parking spots. There are no public transit options to the Preserve.

Accessibility: For questions about accessibility, reach out to Inclusion Point of Contact, Mckenna Erwell, at merwell@geneseelandtrust.org.

Trail Description: The trail from the parking lot starts out as packed gravel and transitions to a grass surface, approximately 5’ wide. As you enter the woods, the trail becomes compacted soil and splits to the left and right. The trail to the right will lead you to Sentell Street and involves a steep downhill and steep uphill ranging from 0-10% slopes, passing by wetlands and a vernal pool.

If you take a left as you enter the woods, a compacted soil trail will lead you towards the east half of the Preserve. You will eventually arrive at another fork in the trail which will lead you around a compacted soil loop trail that is for intermediate and advanced hikers due to the uneven terrain; 0-10%  slopes with roots and leaves, and is approximately 3-4’ wide. To reach the observation deck, stay to the left and follow the trail down to the wetland. To reach the Macy Tree, stay to the right at this intersection. The entire tail system on the preserve is approximately 1.5 miles. See the Macyville Woods trail map below for locations of trails.
